Exceptional early XXth century handmade hooked carpet made of wool and rag strips of knit fabric. The carpet was bought in Quebec.
This is a primitive folk art early hooked rug made of hooked wool threads and strips of knit fabric. It is a rectangular rug with decreasing size rectangles of various colours inside. The stylized pattern features a large vase containing a small flowering tree with colourful flowers in the art deco style. This uncommon urban rather than country pattern possibly reflects a French cultural influence. All sides are neatly finished with a fine edging. No burlap on the back but two colors of canvas: a gray canvas under the black rectangle and an ecru canvas for the rest of the carpet. It is a nice early Canadian antique hooked rug highly desirable and collectable. It would be perfect for a wall hanging in any rustic decor. Typical muted colours of the period.
