Overshot woven lap blanket, seat or child bed cover of bright red fluffy wool on off-white cotton. This is a rare handmade and very collectible item.
This approxiimately 26 inches wide chair cover or lap blanket could have been made on a narrow loom of the past to add gaiety and color to the interior of a farmouse. This type of weaving is called overshot weaving and is mainly a Scottish tradition in Eastern Canada. Overshot coverlets appear in French areas of Quebec as a borrowing from Scottish neighbors about the middle of the 19th century. This one probably dates from the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century since it is made of hand spun and dyed fluffy bright red wool and raw cotton. This very attractive and well made fringed throw or seat covering has been well cared for. It is reversible.
