This is a framed lithograph from the original drawing (graphite heightened with white color on buff wove paper) in the National Gallery of Canada. Frame is made of wood and matting is beige or off-white in color. Picture is covered with a no-glare glass.
William Raphael is a reknown artist, photographer and art teacher of Orthodox Jewish background born in Prussia who immigrated in Montreal, Canada in 1857. He is considered the first professional artist of Jewish origin in Canada.
Like Cornelius Krieghoff, William Raphael was known for his lively genre scenes, depicting habitants and native life. In his numerous portraits, he incorporated a formal realism, basing his compositions on carefully made sketches. This illustration of a Quebec habitant is typical of his work.
The National Gallery of Canada produced this lithograph from the original in its collection.
