This exceptional and very unusual Christmas Card features the bombing a town or village where ruins can be seen and the light and smoke of a heavy bombardment.A short message is written in ink (by an officer?) at the back. The card is a "modele depose" J.S. Paris postcard. The embroidered silk Christmas card is a typical souvenir of the First World War. They are cards onto which an embossed paper frame has been glued, to hold a central piece of silk. In this case, a bombing scene has been hand-embroidered in coloured thread. Also embroidered are a few words "Xmas Wishes from the front" (the words Merry or Happy would have been preposterous, wouldn't they?) . Christmas cards of this type were sold in thin paper envelopes but were seldom sent through the post in them. They were too fragile and, more particularly, they were not cheap souvenirs. Usually they were left unwritten, and mailed with letters. Not this one though. To know more about WWI embroidered cards, visit this British site.
