First Communion is a ceremony in some Christian traditions during which a young person first receives the sacrament of Eucharist.
Often, when taking their First Communion the first communicants wear special clothing and particularly communicant armbands. Often, a girl wears a fancy dress and a veil while boys wear a white silk or satin arm band. The armband is white to symbolize purity and is usually decorated, either embroidered or hand painted on one end only. The other end is used to attach the arm band.
This white satin ribbon features a delicately hand painted floral border and a monogram or combination of letters JHS that forms the abbreviation for the name of Jesus Christ. JHS stands for Jesus Hominum Salvator.
