Rare original Art Deco early plastic (bakelite) German fruit knives rest stand.
Knife handle and rest are made of old synthetic green plastic. Knife rest color is a very bright green while knives have a matter finish. The plastic is crakled. Knives are marked ROSFRI SOLINGEN. "Rosfri" is a Swedish word, meaning that the set was probably made by Solingen for the Swedish market.
Bakelite success led to a vast number of other phenolic plastics like catalin being made which are grouped under the term bakelite by collectors today. Thus not all early plastics are strictly bakelite although the term is commonly applied to many early plastics. The American Catalin Corporation began making appealing plastics in the late 1920s by adding color to a liquid resin. Catalin was used for manufacturing varied jewelry and colorful consumer goods. The majority of these objects are described as Bakelite now.
