This antique plumb bob or plummet is made of a cast iron weight attached with a piece of string made of unidentified fibers. The strings or lines can be made of flax, cotton, silk or hemp or other plant fibres. The plumb bob, or plummet is used as a vertical reference line, or plumb-line. It is a precursor to the spirit level and used to establish a vertical datum.
Until the modern age, plumb bobs were used on most tall structures to provide vertical datum lines for the building measurements. Thin lines allow for a low resist by the wind especially of long lines (bridge builders). Bought with the bob it is adapted to the requirements of the plumb bob. Today the plumb line is very convenient to establish a fixed survey marker for wall paper.
