Handwoven Quebec country woolen shawl for riding in horse carriage. It is greyish brown and beige with some white and dates from the late XIXth century or the beginning of the XXth century. It is very representative of the home made wool costumes of people living in the Quebec countryside at this period. It is a domestic fabrication using the local resources and tools accessible to the farm family. The natural colour wool comes from the farm sheeps and has been treated with such domestic tools that many families possessed at the time. A central hand made seam joins the two parts. Narrow weaving machines of the time didn't allow the making of a large woven piece.
