Antique original 19th century oil painting on quarter-oak grained board of Saint Michael overwhelming the Dragon. This old painting has the characteristics of the early 19th century paintings because of the oils and glossy varnish used to preserve and retain intensity of colours. It features St. Michael winged whole-length figure standing beside the dragon, ready to hit him with an arm in the shape of a key (with which he opened the chain retaining the souls of the deads?) and to throw him in the fire below which produces heavy dark red fumes. The souls over him are ready to be welcome to heaven by God. This oil painting has been made by a confirmed artist but it is unsigned. It might have been painted in a convent to be put in a church or chapel.
In this allegorical painting Saint Michael archangel is represented more as the souls misericordious savior than as the glorious warrior.
