Antique colorful glazed ceramic pie bird.
Back in the 19th century, bakers used chimney-like vents to keep pie fillings from boiling over by letting the steam from the crust out. Originally a variety of shapes were used, but by the 1930s the most common form was a bird like this one.
Placed in the center of the pie before adding the filling, it provided a route for steam to escape resulting in a crisper, less soggy pie bottom.
Measurement: Height: 4 1/2 in (11.5 cm)
Condition: Slight loss of the black glaze on the beak.
Smoke-free environment. Shipping fees always combined on multiple purchase.
NOTE: All our products are antique or vintage. We strive to purchase and present only items in good to near-mint condition, but most pieces will show some degree of wear that we try to describe and show in our pictures.
