Martin Hall & Co. a British silversmiths firm was established in Sheffield in 1820. It was renowned for its high-quality silverware, which was often decorated with intricate design and patterns. It ceased to operate in 1933.

What is a nut dish? At the end of a Victorian formal dinner guests could select a piece of fruit from the beautiful fruit bowls at the center of the dinner table. At this point came nut dishes, the nuts intended to accompany the fruit. It completed the dinner “soup to nuts.” The nut dish is also called bonbon or sweemeat dish.

Why the words "Les étoiles" 1947 inside the well? The 1st National Hockey League All-Star Game (French: Match des étoiles de la Ligue nationale de hockey) took place at Maple Leaf Gardens, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, on October 13, 1947. The game saw the Maple Leafs play a team of NHL all-stars. The All-Stars won the game 4–3. Quebec players Maurice and Butch Richard participated in the game. What else could such a luxury piece commemorate?
