This is a traditional, handmade and handpainted in blue albarello vintage reproduction. Albarello, pottery jar for apothecaries’ ointments and dry drugs had to be easy to hold, use, and shelve. So, its basic form was cylindrical but incurved for grasping and wide-mouthed for access. This is a hand-decorated in traditional style majolica apothecary jar of medium proportion, inscribed "Excremen Canis" (dog's feces), and decorated with a Church prelate hat topping a flower vase. Feces was used in medieval medicine and various fecal-based ingredients are to be found lining the shelves of the apothecary.
It doesn't show real signs of age so I think this is a vintage quality reproduction. Various French earthenware manufacturers have made such copies of antique pharmacy or apothecary jars like Moustiers, Nevers and Gien. When I bought it I was told it was Moustiers. It is made on a potter's wheel and nicely decorated with a traditional XVIIIth century motif.
Many other ingredients used in the past such as earwax, human fat, and saliva,
