The first evidence of napkin rings were seen at the beginning of the 19th century in France. In Europe, napkin rings are traditionally given as christening gifts, with the name of the new member of the family engraved on the piece. Silver or pewter engraved napkin rings can also be given as wedding gifts to celebrate the new couple.
Napkin rings are the best way to keep the rolled napkins in place and to add a personal touch to each table setting. Because paper napkins slowly replaced cloth napkins, napkin rings evolved into a table setting accessory that is used for special or decorative occasions. Napkin rings being designed in a variety of shapes and sizes they can be used in a variety of shape, sizes, colors, or materials for a more unique table setting.
As consumers shift to being more environmentally conservative, a shift from paper napkins back to cloth napkins may indeed occur, and with it a more extensive use of napkin rings.
