The engraving is signed S & H in the bottom left corner. It depicts backwoods lumbering in the 1880's. This illustration of the lumber trade depicts the hardships of that way of life associated with the extra harsh conditions of winter. It features a man conducting a toboggan loaded with a huge log pulled by a horse and sliding on a the road covered with snow. Picturesque Canada: The Country As It Was and Is is one of the most important and ambitious examples of wood-engraved illustration that has ever been published in Canada. |
