Early 1800s soup plate or serving dish of fine English earthenware with vibrant colors. This strong, vitreous, pale ceramic body, whose appearance imitated Chinese porcelains, was introduced in the early 1800s and many of the designs on it were inspired by Chinese originals. While the Chinese pieces were hand-painted, the Spode items were first printed in outline and then coloured in by hand. Printed mark indicates that it was manufactured between 1833 and 1847 when Copeland & Garrett took over the Spode pottery. Pattern number 6778. Impressed mark Royal Opal. The enameled colours and gilding are still very vibrant on this antique soup plate. Would be gorgeous on a wall, as a serving dish or in a cabinet. |
